Hip Hop Conference to Explore Christianity, Culture and the Hip Hop Movement Hip Hop is more than just music; it is a force that is impacting art, economics, politics. . .and Christianity. In light of this, North Park University is hosting a one-day symposium, entitled HipHop: The Voice of the Community - Exploring Christianity, Culture & the Hip-Hop Movement, on Saturday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bakari Kitwana, author of The Hip Hop Generation, will be the keynote speaker at the conference, discussing the connection between Christianity and the Hip Hop movement. A panel discussion will include speaker and rap artist, Fred Lynch and Dr. Rupe Simms of North Park. In addition to two keynote sessions with Kitwana and the panel, there will offer be demonstrations of spoken word, brake dancing, rap, dj’ing and graffiti. The symposium will be held in Viking Hall on North Park’s campus (3225 West Foster Avenue in Chicago). Bakari Kitwana has been the Executive Editor of The Source, the Editorial Director at 3rd World Press, and a music reviewer for NPR’s All Things Considered. He tours the country lecturing on rap music and Black youth culture. Kitwana’s book, The Rap on Gangsta Rap, is regarded as one of the most influential analyses of rap music and hip-hop culture. With more than 18 years of inner-city ministry experience, Fred Lynch is a speaker and rap artist. He is an urban ministry coordinator for Josh McDowel1 Ministries in Dallas, Texas, and a member of the Youth Specialities CORE training team.
