Tetteh Quarshie

Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa

I have always wondered what was going through Tetteh Quarshie’s mind when he decided to send cocoa seeds to Ghana. Was he aware of the impact it would have on the country? Was he motivated by the riches he thought he would amass? Or he was simply interested in a place in history. Whatever his reasons, he single-handedly changed the course of Ghanaian history with the introduction of cocoa seeds. Truly, where would Ghana be without cocoa?

Every nation can recall in its history a single person whose deeds overshadow everyone else’s. Peter the Great, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and George Washington comes to mind. Although not an intellectual, Tetteh Quarshie belongs to this class. Whereas these great men freed the minds of their people, Tetteh Quarshie fed a nation.

YMCA is gone!

By Kwame Agyeman

Ghanaians are a wonderful people! They are always there to support their brothers and sisters in times of joy or sorrows. All over the world, I believe the Ghanaian community comes together for this noble cause. In America, Ghanaians all over the states form communities and associations to ensure that they look out for one another. This is really a beautiful thing. Some of us come here are from remote towns and villages back home in Ghana, therefore the support of friends and sympathizes in times of need is greatly appreciated by all. Not to mention the enormous effort, pain and sacrifices that some of us have to endure to be able to set foot, breathe and feel this land with the hope of realizing the so-called American Dream.

In Chicago this great show of affection and compassionate love is no different. We always get together in times of need to console or rejoice with any of our own when the need arises.
