South African Finance Minister

By SAHM VENTER

Associated Press Writer

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ On the eve of a national drive by activists for AIDS drugs, South Africa’s finance minister was criticized Wednesday for saying advocates of antiretroviral medication were speaking ``voodoo.’’

The incident heightened tensions between AIDS activists and the government, which has been criticized for its often lackluster approach to fighting the disease.

Some 4.7 million South Africans _ one in nine _ are HIV positive, more than in any other country in the world.
