GORDON PREMPEH DIES

Former Ghanaian Soccer Star Succumbs To Cancer

CHICAGO:- Gordon Prempeh is dead! As unbelievable as that may sound, those are the words that the Ghanaian community have been dealing with for the past month. For Mr. Prempeh, an accomplished soccer player who shined during the 70’s, his death has left a huge gap among those of us who knew him.

Mr. Prempeh started his career with the Kumasi Heroes soccer team and progressed to Cornerstones after a short stint, but it was during his tenure with Asante Kotoko that he became a major star. One could hear his name permeating the airwaves and his pictures dominating the sports pages during the times he played. Says Albert “Father” Adade, his teammate at Kotoko, “As a rookie, I played with him he was the team captain. His disposition was one who would play jokes often yet was serious about his game. He was a perfectionist who cared about all the players and mentored several of us.”

Gordon left Ghana for the U.S. in 1977. He attended Eastern Illinois University where he played for a year and then subsequently left to pursue a professional career. He played during the off-season for Sahara, a Ghanaian team from 1981-1995 during which he led them into an African/Caribbean championship.
