A BIT OF AFRICA COMES TO THE ‘HOOD’

FOUR STARS FOR LAGBAJA’S SOUTH SIDE CONCERT

(CHICAGO)-He has been called “the best thing to happen to the African music scene” since Fela, and when Lagbaja and his 15-member band swept into Chicago recently, it was clear why.

Lagbaja brought a bit of Africa to the ‘hood’ during his end of summer concert at the Hayes Center, 4859 S. Wabash Ave. sponsored by Chicago’s African think tank “The Circle of Alafia.

Some 500 African and African-American fans turned out for the 9 p.m. concert, packing the Hayes Center to the tune of fans spilling out near the State Street corridor.

AFRICAN TV DEBUTS IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO, IL: When Wole Osilaja came to the United States to attend college, it was not easy to get news about his homeland. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations just did not report regularly on the daily news from Africa.

The best news from home came infrequently, usually when a relative traveled back and forth. CNN, BBS and the Internet helped, but there still was a huge unsatisfying gap to know the details from back home.

Osilaja hopes to remedy this November at 8:30 a.m. on Channel 23 WFBT-TV. He will produce, “AFRICAN WORLD”, a weekly program of news, information and entertainment that will focus on the interests of Africans and Caribbeans living in Chicago and Indiana.
