Letters to the Editor
Dear personnel of AFRICAN SPECTRUM, My name is Franck BIYONG. I am the founder and singer of a well known afrobeat band (on the European music scene) named MASSAK. This summer I was hired by a Moroccan band for their US tour and while playing in the HOTHOUSE in Chicago (saturday 14 july) I was given your magazine by members of the club’s personnel. I was impressed if not to say astonished to witness your works and the growth and presence of the African culture such major cities. Coming from Cameroon, living in France, my desire is to work with people such as you and on the American soil. Afrobeat is getting more and more recognition and I have been working with my band constantly for 6 years over here and we recently played the London 2001 Afrobeat festival at the Jazz cafe with Tony Allen, Ghettoblaster and Antibalas (Femi KUTI was supposed to play but he cancelled at the last minute so we got the opportunity to play 2 gigs up there). I would like to send you some material so that It could be passed on to people who work in organising concerts and artistic events around African culture. Here in France there is a great deal of ignorance about what our culture is about and most of the youth from the black diaspora don’t know that much about recent African heroes such as FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI or THomas SANKARA. You can check our website on this adress massak.free.fr and if you can send me your adress, I will send you material. Take good care brothers and sisters and keep on doing what you do because our people need information and seriousness and obviously you bring out both. Don’t hesitate to contact me. Franck Biyong.
Dear African Spectrum, I was wondering if at all possible you could help me with a query, do you know how I could contact Anthony C. Jideofor? helen kent Dear Helen, Here is your letter. We hope you find the party you are looking for. Anthony, if you can see this, contact Helen.
