GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE IN CHICAGO By The Journalist CHICAGO:-His Excellency, Chief bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor of Lagos State, Nigeria, made a stopover in Chicago August 14 through 16 to help launch the Mahogany Scholarship Foundation’s (MSF) International Scholarship Exchange Project 2001. Hosted by Ms. Mary Swopes, founder of MSF, the event sought to seek to promote cultural awareness between our youth. On her trip to Lagos in May of 2001, Ms. Swopes was presented with an award by Governor Tinubu who believes in her efforts to embark such an undertaking of making the world a better place for people of African descent. MSF according to Ms. Swopes, “ presents the future as a reminder of the past and the tribulations, suffering, neglect that we have gone through. This should be the greatest challenge to us while we seek the talented and gifted black children around the world and present to them the gateway they can use to augment their talents.” MSF also seek to provide a means by which students in Chicago and Nigeria can have exchange educational programs. In his keynote speech, Governor Tinubu expressed his gratitude to MSF and the government USA and appealed for help in assistance in the following areas: Inter-governmental relations; Executive/Legislature relationship; Federal/State/Local Government relationships; developmental of cottage and small scale industries, urban transport and traffic management, waste management and environmental protection, public health and information technology among others. Since assuming office as Governor of the most populous State on the West Coast of Africa, Mr. Tinubu, with his aides has consistently strived to battle the unemployment and deteriorating public institutions that has plague the economy due to the mismanagement of the previous governmental administrations. Robert Scott later presented the Governor with an award and a flag. Held at NIKO’s Restaurant in Bridgeview, the meeting honored Governor Tinubu and his delegates for outstanding contribution to the welfare of MSF. The night would be filled with entertainment featuring Ashili Tamique Grant, the current Ms. Mahogany U.S.A., and live performances by ‘IMAGES’ Past and Present, a prolific troupe well versed in the poetry, dance and song genre. Emceed by Prince Sammy Ade Gbadebo, the function started at 7:00 p.m. prompt with dinner and the sounds of David Danku of African Hedonist pervading the elegant ballroom. |
