ASANTEMAN ASSOCIATIONS BLACK-TIE DINNER By The Journalist CHICAGO:-The Asanteman Association’s Black-Tie Dinner held at the Marriott Downtown August 25, 2001 capitalized on the magnitude of the enormous crowd of guests and well-wishers that showed up to pitch for support and togetherness. Veering off from the continuous tradition of tardiness that haunts the community, patrons showed up resplendent, cordial and early. Emceed by the notable, likeable and jocular Mr. Sandy Osei Agyeman, the event featured guest speakers including Mr. Steve Dapaah and Dr. Aaron Ohemeng, cultural dancers and abundance of music provided by Ghanatta Band. During his keynote speech, Nana Akwasi Appiah, Asantefuohene of Chicago, urged all to be supportive of the cause and to stop nitpicking about trivial matters particularly personal and private lives of members who yield no progress and causes separatism. “It is the duty of all complainants to be members of particular associations before vilification,” Nana Appiah asserted. Mr. Dapaah, the guest speaker of the night in an exceptional speech charmed the patrons with his witty and eye-opening account of the experiences of growing up in Kumasi. He painted a vivid picturesque of the nostalgic life back home and stressed particularly about how those of us abroad could contribute or donate our used clothing to the orphans and the needy back home. He also advised patrons to think about sending home the funds and technology to educate the youth in building wells so that even the remotest regions in the country can have access to good drinking water. Nana Appiah also took the opportunity to congratulate some patrons celebrating their birthdays including Nana Ama Kyaa, Nana Karikari and Nana Aboagye Manu. Mr. & Mrs. Ofei Papafio also were acknowledged for their one-year wedding anniversary. Plaques of exemplary qualities and contribution to the association were presented to Nana Ama Kyaa, Mr. Sandy Osei Agyeman, Wofa Kojo Renner, Mrs. Abena Bekoe, Mrs. Betty Agyemang, Mr. & Mrs. Kwame Boakye-Yiadom and Mr. Sampson Akotuah. In an emotional gesture of remembrance, Nana Appiah asked patrons for a minute of silence for the late William J. Attah who passed on to the ‘village’ earlier this year. Nana called on Adwoa Serwah, Attah’s only child to the stage where she was acknowledged during the tribute. Later patrons got the chance to invade the dancing floor as Mr. Dan Boadi and his band Ghanatta spewed out oldies and latest highlife tunes. The night would be filled with the elation of organizers who rejoiced at the huge turnout. |
