Dear Publisher, Thanks for your publication, especially the fine article “Marriages between Africans and African-Americans” by Kwadwo Kyei. As an extremely happy and satisfied African-American married to an African, I received the above-mentioned article joyously. A copy of this article is being sent to my other home, Africa! I have also downloaded copies for personal reference, as your fair and balanced article, explains both the joys and the obstacles. My personal comment is that “gold diggers and charlatans” are the ones that have created such distrust in the area of INS. It would be interesting to see an additional balanced article on that subject. Please extend my message to the writer, Mr. Kyei. I have also found your advertisements to be quite useful. Please do not lower your standards. Thank you! Satisfied African-American, Chicago
Dear Journalist, I am a Ghanaian and I am very sad and angry about what I read in the Chicago Sun Times. I will be very happy if you will respond to the article either in the African-Spectrum or send an article to the Chicago Sun times until they publish it. Because this particular article is very degrading to Ghanaians. We haven’t done anything wrong to deserve such treatment from whoever wrote that article. We Ghanaians in America receive the same treatment and I don’t think anybody, whether you are white, African, or African American do not deserve any special treatment in Ghana as a Whole. Ghanaians welcome everybody visiting the Country and they are supposed to obey and abide with our laws. If they can’t, they should find another motherland because I cant see what they contribute to the Country to give us such a bad reputation. Whatever they mentioned in the Sun Times, we Ghanaians experience worse in the US. We might be a third-world country but that doesn’t mean we should open our doors to corruption. We have enough graduates in Ghana hawking on the street, and we don’t want our brothers to be watchmen, maidservants and doing other odd jobs and thinking that’s the way of life. Because we in America are doing those odd jobs for our brothers in Ghana to survive. Actually, I’m very disturbed about this article so much that I don’t know what I’m writing about, all I want you to do is write something about it. Thank you! Tracy, Chicago
Dear Tracy, Thank you very much for taking time out to write to us. We spoke to the writer of Tangled Roots in London. He has been overwhelmed with letters. See pages 8 and 12 for some of the responses. Also see our writers’ rebuttals on pages 4 and 13. As you know , African Spectrum has been around for two years. During this period, it seems that people only write or call us when they need help. Not that we are reluctant to help people but why do we have to wait till something happens. We created this paper to give a voice to all. As you decide to make this country your home or not, it is the participation and getting involved with our own affairs that should matter. The media over here will not respond to our inquiries except when it is something negative and it is time that we use this medium to our utmost benefit. We know exactly what we as Black people go through yet we keep silent and receive all the insults dished out. Do not be delitescent about your ideas. If others know that we have our own means of rebutting articles or disseminating what pertains us, they may be disinclined to bully us they way they have been. Never have we been so bombarded with letters, calls and E-mails when the article “Tangled Roots” appeared in the Wall Street Journal March 15, 2001 and the Chicago Sun-Times March 18, 2001. It is time we rise up to the challenge and support this newspaper. The paper is free but your generous offer of $18 per year towards subscribing will go a long way in helping us keep up with the times. We know you like reading this newspaper so do contribute. We as a community would flourish and move on together in this country.
Dear African Spectrum, I am a recent college graduate and I have recently moved to the area. Your publication fills a void for many of us seeking African news and events in the chicago area. I am thrilled and glad to read your articles and features. Would it be possible to have more community classified listings, where civic and African-centered organizations could be listed as either links or contacts so that we could be updated as to who is doing what, where, and how to get in touch with them? Thanks, Ansa.Akyea, Chicago
Dear Akyea, Your request has already been proposed to the Ghana National Council through its President Clement Timpo. We are yet to receive a final response from him. Not only will that information be useful but it will help us feel connected.
