Sierra-Leone Dakar (PANA) African athletes had collected 13 medals at the Sydney Olympic
Games, which have so far been dominated by the United States. Ethiopia
is leading with three medals, including gold by Haile Gebreselassie in
10,000m while Assefa Mezgebu won bronze in the same race. A woman runner,
Gete Wami, collected Bronze in 5,000m. Mozambique’s Maria Mutola collected
the first African gold medal in 800m. South Africa has three medals, including
silver won by Terence Parkin in the men’s 200m freestyle swimming. Australia Sydney (PANA) Numerous cases of joyriders have dogged previous Olympic
Games before, but this year, it is the case of the “joyless rider” that
has taken centre stage. Cyclist Ken Muhindi has complained that Kenyan
officials have completely neglected him since he arrived in Sydney close
to a fortnight ago. He says he has been unable to train because he lacks
equipment and had been completely demotivated prior to his mountain bike
race yesterday. Ghana Accra -(PANA) Oracle Corporation, the world software giants, has entered
into partnership with NIIT, the global IT solutions corporation to offer
comprehensive training on Oracle technologies to Africa and Middle East
audiences. In that regard, NIIT, and its Ghanaian partner i2000 Limited
are to invest over ¢1 billion into an Oracle Information Technology (IT)
Scholarship Fund called Adepa-2000’ for training 200 people selected nationally. Gambia Banjul (PANA) The director of Broadcasting Services, Tombong Saidy, has
revealed to Daily Observer that the Gambia Radio and Television Services
(GRTS) has planned to “explore the prospect of assembling quality television
sets in The Gambia.” Speaking to this newspaper, Thursday, September 14,
Mr. Saidy said GRTS plans to venture into TV assembling because his institution
cannot depend entirely on advertisements and programme sponsors to sustain
itself when it goes autonomous. Nigeria Lagos -(PANA) Former Senate President, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo yesterday handed
over to the new Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, Okadigbo, in his hand
over note, said he left N831-,361,250.89K in the kitty. In a brief ceremony
at the office of the Senate President at the National Assembly complex,
Abuja, Okadigbo, stated that the House of Representatives has a net balance
of N423,992,665.43 on its recurrent receipt as credit for the period,
January to August 10, 2000. Liberia Monrovia -(PANA) West African Health Ministers have agreed to eradicate
the crippling polio disease from the subregion on a synchronized basis.
Health Minister Peter Coleman told a news conference Thursday that Liberia
is among countries in the subregion that are exerting efforts to eradicate
the disease from their respective territories. He disclosed that the synchronized
campaign will be conducted on October 16- 17 and November 20-21 this year. Uganda Kampala - (PANA) A women’s organisation has threatened to sue Kampala
City Council (KCC) for arresting alleged sex-workers. A statement sent
to The Monitor by The Federation of Uganda Women Business Organisations,
Industry and Agriculture said some of those arrested were innocent mothers.
“Many women arrested are widows and single mothers, have growing and fatherless
children who cannot be looked after nor educated,” the statement signed
by the groups’ president, Stella Nambuya said.
