‘SOUNDS
OF THE THUNDER’ By The Journalist The boys are good! Their debut album “Sounds of the Thunder” was produced, mixed and mastered in their father’s home studio in Old Bridge, NJ. Kudos goes to their father Dr. Yaw Frimpong, who has supported the boys’ endeavor in making sure their dreams come true. According to Dr. Frimpong, Kwame, the older of the two boys started self-tutoring on a keyboard that the doctor had connected to a PC. Amazed at how natural the art of music playing came to the boy, Dr. Kwame proceeded to take him for music lessons. Since then, Kwame, 13, has been playing for the school band and also is a back up piano player at his church. His younger brother Kofi also followed the same footsteps and is now an accomplished musician at age 11. Together, the boys are known as “Frimps” and their first album involves rhythms that are crisp and clear, lyrics that proves that the boys have done their homework when it comes to Hip-Hop. With lots of creativity and originality, they tackle each song with precise acumen. The whole idea began when Dr. Kwame, once an aspiring musician, started making up sounds of African origin and asking his boys to play back on the piano. Amazed at how quickly they could imitate his sounds on the piano, Dr. Kwame would call up the family and had each member come up with a sound that they boys could play. Soon afterwards they ventured into their own territory and developed their style. Talk about doing what the Romans do when in Rome, the boys had acquired the love for hip-hop and would make beats after beat. The only problem according to Dr. Kwame was how his boys would rap to these beats while using the lingo-associated hip-hop. “Rapping is an acquired talent and no one basically had to teach them,” said the doctor. Kwame started repeating and learning the styles and delivery of some of his favorite rap groups. With the technique mastered and his style intact, he started having his little brother Kofi go through the same vigorous procedure. Within a short time, Kofi became an expert too. The support structure of his family would be firmly behind them and the idea of making their album soon materialized. Finally, in December 1999, the boys released a demo CD of 4 rap songs and worked vigorously toward releasing this album. Dr. Kwame, while tutoring the boys in music, also made it clear that their education should never be discarded. Heeding on to the advice, both boys have achieved High Honor roll in their respective schools, a feat that has earned them a family reward of a one-week vacation to Disneyland. Show these young boys some love by buying their CD. For more information about acquiring the album, contact Dr. Kwame in writing at A.B.A.S. Inc., P. O. Box 252, Old Bridge, NJ, 08857.
