WHAT ARE THEY FIGHTING FOR?

They used to be citizens of the same country. They fought side by side during the eighties to get rid of a brutal, communist-oriented military dictatorship. When the independence aspirations of the minority ethnic group could no longer be stifled, the main ethnic group and the separatists sat down together, in the manner of civilized people, to hammer out an agreement that eventually split their common homeland into two sovereign, independent entities. As citizens of separate nations, all the indications were that the former compatriots had chosen the path of peaceful co-existence on the Horn of Africa.
