Envoy Confirms Death Of Seven Peacekeepers In Sierra Leone

LUSAKA, Zambia (PANA) - Seven UN peacekeepers who were among the troops captured by the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in Sierra Leone are dead, Liberian ambassador to Zambia, Llewellyn Witherspoon, has disclosed. Speaking when he presented his credentials to Zambian president Frederick Chiluba at State House Thursday, Witherspoon, however, said the nationalities of the dead soldiers have not yet been ascertained.

Guinness Dominates Bourse Under Bearish Sentiments

ACCRA, Ghana (PANA) - Guinness Ghana Limited continued to dominate trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange this week selling 782,200 shares after 1.1 million shares Monday in a cross offer. David Abbey, an analyst with Databank Brokerage Limited, explained that the huge sales were possible because the company had not exceeded the 74 percent non-resident foreign investor holdings.

African Economist Makes Case For African Currency

PARIS, France (PANA) - A Paris-based African economist has proposed the establishment of an African currency among the CFA franc zone countries. Nicolasn Agbohou made the suggestion in a book, ‘The Franc CFA And the EURO Against Africa’ published recently. He said the African countries concerned would forever be condemned to economic dependence and re-colonisation if they failed to float their own currency.

Wade Encourages Moroccan Businessmen To invest in Senegal

RABAT, Morocco (PANA) - Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has urged more Moroccan economic operators to invest in his country. At a meeting with Moroccan businessmen in Rabat Wednesday, he said Dakar had many business partnership opportunities for them. Senegal has already established an investment and major facility building agency.

MPLA Women To Attend Congress In Portugal

LUANDA, Angola (PANA) - The women wing of Angola’s ruling MPLA party will be represented at the two-day congress of Portuguese Women Democratic Movement taking place in Lisbon from 2-3 June. Speaking before her departure from Luanda Wednesday, OMA’s national executive secretary for woman promotion, Alice Chivala, said that her group intends to strengthen ties with the Portuguese organisation.

Swiss Firm Buys Tanzania’s Airport Handling Company

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (PANA) - A Swissair owned company Tuesday paid off 4.8 million US dollars to acquire majority shares of the Dar es Salaam Airport Handling Company Limited or DAHACO. Swissport acquired 51 percent of the-handling company under a block share sale agreement, outbidding former shareholders, Swedfund International, Scandinavian Airlines Systems and the Industrialisation Fund for Developing Countries of Denmark.
